Gabalfa fencing

Fences for Gabalfa Homes

Gabalfa takes its name from an old ferry crossing on the Taff, though these days most people know it for Western Avenue and the interchange. After the Second World War the Glamorganshire Canal was filled in and a large council estate was built alongside Western Avenue, with older houses off North Road and student halls at Llys Talybont making up the rest of the area.

For us, that means plenty of semi-detached and terraced back gardens with long shared boundaries, many still lined with timber posts that went in decades ago. Once a timber post rots at ground level, the next strong wind takes the whole run with it, and that is the call we get most often from CF14.

Our answer is to take the old posts out completely and replace them with concrete posts or galvanised steel Duraposts, set deep, with a gravel board under every panel. Featheredge, closeboard or hit and miss panels then go in on top.

Repair or replace?

When a Fence Can Be Fixed, and When It Can't

Not every damaged fence needs replacing from end to end. If the posts are sound and only a panel or two has gone, we can fit new panels to match. If the posts are rocking, snapped or soft at the base, new panels on old posts will simply come down again, so we will tell you honestly that the run needs new posts.

Send us a couple of photos showing the whole fence and the bottom of a few posts, and we can usually tell which it is before we visit.

If your garden backs onto one of the main roads, a solid fence with no gaps, such as closeboard on concrete posts, gives the most privacy and hides the traffic from view.

Rules in Cardiff

Fence Heights and Permission in Gabalfa

Back gardens

A fence, wall or gate up to 2 metres high usually needs no planning permission in Wales.

Beside a road

Where the fence runs next to a road used by vehicles, or its footpath, the limit is 1 metre. That catches plenty of corner plots and front gardens near the main roads.

Who to ask

Cardiff Council is the planning authority for Gabalfa. Check with them first if your home is listed or its permitted development rights have been removed.

Putting back a blown-down fence at the same height as before does not normally need permission.

Questions

Gabalfa Fencing: Your Questions

Do you work in Gabalfa?

Yes. We fit and replace fences throughout Gabalfa and the rest of CF14, from the streets beside Western Avenue to those off North Road. Call 029 2271 5157 if you want to check your road.

My fence blew down. Can you just put the panels back up?

If the posts are still solid, yes. If they have rotted or snapped at ground level, the panels will come down again, so we recommend new concrete or steel posts. Photos of the post bases help us tell you which before we visit.

Why do you use concrete or steel posts instead of timber?

Timber posts rot where they meet the soil, which is why so many older fences fail in a storm. Concrete posts and galvanised steel Duraposts do not rot, and both take a gravel board under each panel to keep the timber off the ground.

Can my front garden fence be 2 metres high?

Not where it runs beside a road used by vehicles or its footpath. There, the limit without planning permission is 1 metre. Back garden fences away from the road can usually go up to 2 metres.

Do you replace gates as well?

Yes. We make side and rear gates to fit the opening, and can replace a gate that has dropped or no longer shuts.

Is removing the old fence included?

Yes. Taking the old fence down and getting rid of it is part of the job.
