Timber decking in Cardiff

Natural wood decking, properly installed

Pressure-treated softwood remains the most popular decking choice across Cardiff — and for good reason. It's cost-effective, widely available in the sizes you need, straightforward to work with and when it's properly treated and installed on a sound frame it will give you 15 to 20 years of solid service with simple seasonal maintenance.

We've installed timber decking across Cardiff for over 10 years — everything from a simple 3x3 metre square off the back door to larger wraparound designs, side returns connecting a back garden to patio doors, and multi-section decked areas alongside new fencing and landscaping. The photo on the left shows a recent Cardiff project where decking formed part of a full garden transformation including new fencing and planting.

Every timber deck we build starts with the frame. A well-built, correctly spaced joist frame on properly set posts is what separates a deck that's still going strong in 15 years from one that's bouncing and rotting in five.

What we install

Types of timber decking we install across Cardiff

We focus on flat and ground-level timber decking — the most practical and popular choice for the majority of Cardiff gardens. Every installation is made to measure for your specific space.

Garden Decking

A flat decked area in the rear garden — the most common installation across Cardiff. Sized to your outdoor space, positioned to make the most of available light and garden layout. Simple, practical and transforms how you use your garden.

Side Return Decking

Timber decking run along the side of a property connecting to patio or bi-fold doors — a very common request across Cardiff terraced and semi-detached homes. Creates a practical, attractive link between house and garden that makes patio doors genuinely usable in all conditions.

Wraparound Decking

Decking that extends around two or more sides of a property, often connecting a rear garden deck to a side return or a front entrance area. Works particularly well on detached and corner properties where multiple outdoor spaces can be unified into one seamless design.

Decking as Part of a Full Garden Project

Timber decking alongside new fencing, paving or landscaping — all under one contractor. We design the decking to integrate with the wider garden layout so everything looks planned rather than added in stages. One quote, one team, one completion date.

Our approach

How we build timber decking in Cardiff

The boards are what people see but the frame is what makes a timber deck last. Here is how we approach every installation.

01

Site visit and measurement

We always visit before quoting. We measure the space, assess the ground conditions, check access and talk through your design preferences. Flat decking sounds simple but there are still decisions to make about board direction, step positions and how the deck meets the house wall.

02

Post setting and frame construction

Posts are set in concrete at the correct depth for the ground conditions. Joists are sized for the span they need to carry and spaced correctly for pressure-treated softwood board specifications. We use galvanised joist hangers and fixings throughout — no shortcuts in the frame that show up as problems five years later.

03

Board laying and finishing

Pressure-treated C16 softwood deck boards laid with consistent spacing for drainage and board movement. Screwed through the face with stainless steel fixings pre-drilled to prevent splitting. Fascia boards fitted to the frame edges for a clean, finished appearance. Steps constructed and integrated as part of the deck rather than bolted on as an afterthought.

04

Aftercare advice

We leave every job with honest aftercare guidance. Pressure-treated softwood benefits from a treatment oil or decking stain applied in the first season and every two to three years thereafter. Left untreated it will weather to a natural silver-grey which many Cardiff customers prefer — personal choice, not a problem. We will tell you what to expect either way.

Making the right choice

Wood decking vs composite — which is right for your Cardiff garden?

We install both and we'll always give you an honest steer rather than pushing you toward the higher-margin option. Here is the straightforward comparison.

Pressure-treated timber

Lower upfront cost — significantly more affordable than composite for equivalent area
Natural look that suits the majority of Cardiff garden settings
Individual boards easily replaced if damaged
15 to 20 year lifespan when maintained
Requires treatment every 2–3 years to maintain appearance and longevity
Can develop surface algae in shaded or damp areas — manageable with annual brush-down

Composite decking

Low maintenance — no treating, no sanding, no oiling required
Won't rot, warp or splinter
25 year manufacturer warranties available on premium products
Wide colour and finish choice — grey, anthracite, wood-effect tones
Higher upfront cost than timber
Board matching can be harder if a single board needs replacing years later

For most Cardiff homeowners installing flat garden decking on a budget, pressure-treated timber is our recommendation. For customers who want to eliminate maintenance entirely, or where the deck is in a location that makes future maintenance difficult, composite is worth the additional investment. We will tell you honestly which we think is right for your specific situation when we visit.

Frequently asked questions about wooden decking

  • Do you install timber decking across Cardiff?

Yes — we install pressure-treated softwood timber decking across all areas of Cardiff and the surrounding Vale of Glamorgan including Penarth, Barry, Dinas Powys, Llandough, Caerphilly and beyond. We're based in Penarth CF64 so the whole of Cardiff is local to us. Call 029 2271 5157 or request a free quote online and we'll arrange a site visit at a convenient time.

  • What type of timber do you use for decking in Cardiff?

We use pressure-treated C16 softwood for all our decking installations in Cardiff. This is kiln-dried structural timber that has been pressure-treated with preservative to resist rot, insect damage and moisture — the standard specification for outdoor decking in the UK. When properly maintained it will last 15 to 20 years. We don't use untreated timber for decking as it simply won't last in the Welsh climate.

  • How long will timber decking last in Cardiff?

Properly installed pressure-treated softwood decking will typically last 15 to 20 years in Cardiff conditions. The key factors are the quality of the frame construction — posts set correctly, joists sized and spaced properly, galvanised fixings throughout — and basic maintenance of the boards. An annual brush-down and treatment oil or decking stain every two to three years will keep the deck in excellent condition. Left completely untreated the boards will weather to a natural silver-grey and still perform well structurally, just with a more weathered appearance.

  • Do I need planning permission for timber decking in Cardiff?

In most cases no. Decking under 300mm above ground level and covering less than 50% of the garden area generally falls within permitted development in Wales and does not require planning permission. If your property is in a conservation area — which applies to parts of Cardiff city centre and Penarth — there may be additional restrictions. We will flag anything relevant when we visit for your quote. For raised decking above 300mm, see our raised decking Cardiff page for the specific rules.

  • How much does timber decking cost in Cardiff?

The cost depends on the size of the area, complexity of the design, whether steps are included and ground conditions. As a general guide, small flat decks start from around £750 supply and fit, rising for larger areas and more complex designs. We always visit and measure before quoting — there's no reliable way to give a meaningful price without seeing the space. All quotes are written and itemised with no hidden extras.

  • How long does timber decking installation take in Cardiff?

A straightforward flat deck installation typically takes one to two days. Larger areas, wraparound designs or decking that forms part of a wider garden project alongside fencing or landscaping will take longer and we'll confirm the timeline at the quote stage. We don't rush structural work — the frame needs to be right before boards go down.

  • What areas near Cardiff do you cover for timber decking?

As well as Cardiff we regularly install timber decking in Penarth, Barry, Dinas Powys, Llandough, Sully, Wenvoe, Rumney, St Mellons, Caerphilly, Llantwit Major, Rhoose and across the Vale of Glamorgan. If you're unsure whether we cover your specific postcode just call us on 029 2271 5157 — the answer is almost always yes.
