Fence repairs · Storm damage · Posts and panels
Fence blown down or leaning into next door? We repair panels, posts and gravel boards across Cardiff and the Vale, with a free temporary repair to make your garden safe in the meantime.
Local fence repair service
Many fence repairs start the same way. A strong wind finds the weakest post or panel, one section goes over or starts to lean, and the panels either side take the extra strain. Left for a few weeks, the damage usually spreads along the run.
J&Z Fencing Cardiff repair garden fences across Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan. We look at what has actually failed, whether that is the panel, the post, the gravel board or the ground around it, and fix that.
If only part of your fence is damaged and the rest is sound, a repair is normally the cheaper option. If the posts along the whole run are rotten, we will tell you, and explain what a replacement would involve instead.
Free temporary fence repair
When a fence comes down in a storm, the worry is rarely how it looks. It is the dog that can now get out onto the road, children playing next to a loose panel, or a back garden left open to the lane. That is why we offer a free temporary fence repair for emergency situations, on the understanding that we then come back to carry out the full repair or replacement.
We get out to you as soon as we can and secure the gap, usually by refixing, propping or bracing the damaged section. Then we come back at a time that suits you to complete the full repair or replacement properly.

What we fix
Blown-down panels
Panels lifted out of concrete posts or torn off timber posts by the wind. Where the posts are sound, we refit or replace the panels and secure them so they stay put.
Leaning fences
Usually the posts giving way, either rotten at ground level or loose in ground softened by heavy rain. Resetting or replacing them brings the fence back upright.
Snapped or rotten posts
Timber posts tend to fail just below the ground. We replace them with new posts, or with concrete posts that won't rot.
Broken gravel boards
A cracked or missing gravel board leaves the panel sitting on damp soil, where it rots from the bottom up. We fit new boards under the panels.
Loose or split boards
On featheredge and closeboard fences, single boards and rails can be replaced without changing the whole panel.
Damaged security fencing
Palisade and mesh fencing hit by vehicles or damaged in a break-in, repaired with as little disruption to your business as possible. See our security fencing service.
Not sure what has failed? Send us a couple of photos through the contact form and we can give you an idea of what is needed before we visit.
Repair or replace?
A repair makes sense when the damage is limited to a few panels or posts and the rest of the fence is in good condition. Replacing two or three panels between sound concrete posts is a quick job, and the fence works as it did before.
Replacement tends to be better value when the posts are rotten along the whole run, the panels are thin dip-treated ones that have warped, or the fence has already been patched several times. Paying to fix one section of a fence that is failing everywhere only moves the problem to the next panel.
If timber posts are being replaced anyway, we recommend concrete posts and gravel boards. They don't rot, and a panel can be lifted out and swapped on its own if it is ever damaged again.
How long a repair lasts depends as much on the rest of the fence as on the repair itself, so we judge each one on its own merits and give you an honest idea of how long it should last before replacement makes more sense.
Matching what is there
When only a couple of panels need replacing, most people want them to match the rest of the fence. Standard featheredge and lap panels are easy to match, although new timber looks brighter than weathered panels for the first few months until it tones down.
If your concrete posts are sound but the timber panels keep needing attention, the panels alone can be swapped for composite panels that slot into the existing posts, so there is no more treating.
And if it turns out the whole fence is past saving, our garden fencing service covers new fences in every style, with the old one taken away.
Shared boundaries
Most garden fences sit on a boundary, so a repair often means working from both sides. A leaning section may need temporary braces on the neighbour's side before the posts can be reset, so it helps to let them know before we arrive.
If you aren't sure whose fence it is, look at your title deeds. HM Land Registry says a “T” mark on your side of a boundary generally means you maintain it, but the marks are not always conclusive, and which side the posts are on is no guide either.
Where a fence is shared, many neighbours simply agree to split the cost. We can quote for the whole repair so you both know where you stand.
How it works
Costs
Every repair is priced on what has failed, so we quote once we have seen photos or the fence itself. The main things that change the price are:
Few buildings insurance policies pay out for storm damage to fences, so check yours before you plan around a claim.

Send us a few photos of the damage and rough measurements, and we'll come back with a provisional price or a time to come and look.
FAQs
Yes. If your fence has come down and your garden is no longer safe for pets or children, call 029 2271 5157. We offer a free temporary fence repair to secure it as soon as we can, on the understanding that we then come back to complete the full repair or replacement.
Usually, yes. A lean almost always comes from the posts, either rotten at ground level or loose in soft ground. If the panels are in good condition, resetting or replacing the posts straightens the fence without replacing it.
It depends on the fence as much as the repair. A new panel between sound concrete posts can last as long as the rest of the run, while a repair to an old fence with tired timber posts may only buy a few years. Every fence is different, so we look at each one and give you an honest idea of how long the repair should last before replacement is the better option.
Yes. If the posts are sound we can replace single panels, matching the style and height of your existing fence as closely as possible.
Often not. Which? found that only around 1% of buildings insurance policies pay out for storm damage to fences, gates and hedges. Check your policy wording before you plan around a claim.
It depends who owns the boundary. Check your title deeds: a T mark on your side generally means the fence is yours to maintain, although HM Land Registry says the marks are not always conclusive. Where it is unclear, many neighbours share the cost.
Yes. We repair palisade and mesh security fencing for offices, warehouses and business sites, often after damage from vehicles, and plan the work to keep disruption to a minimum.
