You may have previously arranged quite severe pruning, but this can often result in more aggressive, thicker growth, and it may seem there is no alternative other than to arrange a tree removal service.
The J&Z team have removed many trees, but you will always need to check that your tree is not under a TPO, which stands for a Tree Preservation Order. If it is, this changes things quite dramatically. If you have a tree which has a TPO, you could be fined if it is removed, and this can also extend to certain alterations through cutting too.
The local authority will have a record of all trees which have a TPO on them. If you find that yours has one, it may unfortunately mean that we can't do any work on it until the council has given consent, and an application can take weeks or even months to decide. The strongest case would be if the tree is diseased and already dying. If it isn't, generally speaking a TPO has been put on a tree because of its value to the area's appearance, so don't be surprised if your application to have it removed is rejected.

Once a tree has been felled, this will have been done a foot or so from the ground, so that clean and safe cutting can be done at the base of the tree. However, the result is a stump. Tree stump removal in Cardiff can be classed as a separate service, as sometimes gardens have had a tree removed and the stump left, because removal requires additional equipment and costs which may have been beyond the initial budget. For some people the stump can be a feature, or be used as a seat or bird table, but following a house sale new owners may well have different plans for their garden, and a large stump isn't part of that plan.
If simply left, the stump can mean that the tree is still alive. Some varieties of tree may start to sprout very small thin branches from it, and similarly the roots can continue to spread. There are a couple of ways stumps can be removed to allow the ground to be flattened and used differently.

There are a few ways you can remove a tree stump, and there are a number of pros and cons to each. For people who, for whatever reason, decide not to employ the services of a professional, you can simply axe away at a stump. This is a long-winded process, intensely physical and can be very messy. This is a DIY approach, and sometimes people simply give in and the tree is still alive. The other DIY approach is to chemically treat the tree stump. Normally the instructions will advise drilling holes down into the stump, into which the chemical solution or granules are poured. The amount of chemicals used will depend on the tree type and size, and this chemical killing can take weeks or even months. At the end of it you will still have a stump to remove, but since the tree will be dead it will be easier to cut and axe out than when it is still alive.
The disadvantage of this approach is that it takes time, which can't be predicted exactly, and afterwards, since the tree's roots are spread across quite an area of ground, the toxic chemicals will end up seeping into the soil as part of the stump killing process. Depending on the tree, its roots and its size, the surrounding soil will be affected to a different degree, but unless you are going to cover the area with something like artificial grass, you may even have to wait a full year before planting in the area where the tree stump and its roots were, otherwise the chemicals in the soil will kill your new plants too.
For this reason, most specialist tree service companies use tree stump grinding in Cardiff as their preferred tree stump removal option. It is a much more immediate way of removing a tree stump. Stump grinders are specially designed machines which are solely used for grinding down tree stumps. As the name suggests, the machine grinds down the stump, using a large toothed wheel to work from the top down. It is rather like a giant angle grinder attached to the front and bottom of a wheelbarrow, so it can be moved along the stump and lifted up from the back so that the grinder can reach further down the stump. Removing deadwood helps the tree along this process, allowing more nutrients to reach the healthy branches. It also removes a potential hazard, as dead branches will likely become dislodged and fall. What are the options for tree crown shaping?
Cutting selected branches in a certain way will transform the crown of a tree. There are a few different terms for how a tree is cut:
Crown thinning. This is where a number of inner branches of a tree are cut out. Unlike dead wooding, this also includes branches that are not dying, but by reducing the total number of branches sharing nutrients, the branches left become very healthy. Thinning the crown reduces the area wind can use to push a tree over, so it is also a good way to prevent storm damage and uprooting. It also lets more light pass through, allowing more plant life to grow under it too.
Crown lifting. To lift a tree crown, the objective is to increase the visible length of the trunk, so the cutting and pruning focuses on the lower branches. Once done, it lets more light through. However, the main reason for lifting a crown is to remove low branches at or below head height that cause an obstruction. For larger trees along roads, this can even prevent larger vehicles from coming into contact with branches and breaking them. Following a crown lift along with some shaping, you will be left with more of a lollipop shape to your tree.
Crown reduction. Reducing the crown of a tree is simply reducing its overall size from every angle. Topping or lopping a tree sometimes implies the same thing, although it sounds a little cruder! All branches are cut to form the crown shape. Depending on the tree variety, this may give a neat ball, either football or rugby-ball shaped, or a more triangular shape for coniferous varieties.
