  • Composite Decking Cardiff

Composite decking in Cardiff is definitely on the up - and we aren't just referring to a raised decking area! If your still on the fence regarding whether to go for timber of composite our specialists can talk you through some of the more common reasons why people choose composite and whether of not you feel this would be right for you.

Understanding your budget, aesthetic ambitions and environmental position may shape your final decision more than you think but hopefully you'll be happy with the final outcome.

Whilst composite decking is a combination of more than one material the one predominant material is plastic with a small amount of wood fibres. It is the fact that it isn't 100 percent plastic that it is called a composite whereas plastic or PVC decking is all plastic. Quite often the two terms are used interchangeably but they are not exactly the same.

    Different Decking Installations

Whilst most people don't even consider that decking can be laid in a number of different fashions it is worth pointing out that you can make your decking a little more interesting from an aesthetic perspective based on how you decide to lay your deck boards. The main options are:

    Parallel Decking:

For this option, the boards are laid parallel to each other, typically with a gap in between them for water drainage. This is the most common way deck boards are laid and generally speaking if you don't specify otherwise this is how your deck boards will be installed.

    Perpendicular Decking:

The boards are laid perpendicular to the joists, so if you were looking at your deck from an aerial perspective this would have the boards lengthways away from your house whilst parallel would run along the line of your wall.

    Diagonal Decking:

The boards are laid at a diagonal angle, usually 45 degrees to the joists, creating a diagonal pattern.

    Herringbone Decking:

Quite simply as the name implies, the boards are laid in a herringbone pattern, creating a unique and decorative look.

    Framed Decking:

Again as the name implies, for a rectangular deck area the outside boards would be laid to for a frame for the inner boards. The number of boards you use for this will determine the thickness of the frame with the inner boards being laid in any of the above formats.

Ultimately, choosing how to lay your deck boards will depend on your personal preference, the overall look you are trying to achieve, and any other design elements you may have in mind. However, this may also affect your budget. Parallel and perpendicular layouts will have the least wastage. With more complicated patterns there will be more cutting and off costs as a result so there will be additional labour and material costs to consider.

    Composite Decking Installers Cardiff

Whilst many companies will be happy fitting composite deck boards as an alternative to timber this will be often be onto a wooden frame. This is quite a common practise and is a more cost effective way of being able to afford the move to composite decking boarding. This is sometimes also mixed with timber balustrades and the cost of these can add significantly to a composite decking project and stretch the budget too far.

A number of composite decking manufacturers have their own frame and subframe systems, which some decking installers will shy away from, our team of composite decking installers in Cardiff do not. These frames and subframes will either be composite or aluminium, which are both designed to last a very long time. They are excellent systems but they will add a lot more to the total cost of your decking, which is why timber joists are so often used instead. You will not need to carry out maintenance on a timber frame so a top layer of composite deck boards if generally a very good compromise to get good overall value for a composite decking area.

    Timber Decking Cardiff

Timber decking in Cardiff still continues to be the first choice of decking, although the gap is closing. This is due mainly to cost and the fact that a new timber decking will last longer than most people will stay in their property for and therefore do not see as much value in the additional expense which comes with composite decking.

However, when we talk about timber or wooden decking there are actually two main types of timber decking and they have quite different qualities and costs. The most common by far is softwood decking, as this is the most affordable option, however hardwood decking provides a natural wooden finish and requires much, much less maintenance. This does however come at a premium with hardwood decking using woods such as teak, ipe and iroko. These are slow growing trees and less common, generally being imported from countries outside Europe leading to their higher price point.

    Decking Maintenance

Depending on which material of deck board you end up choosing this will have an impact on the amount and type of decking maintenance you 'ought' to do.

Softwood decking will need the most TLC with regular cleaning and treating. If your decking is located underneath trees it is likely that your cleaning requirements will be higher than if your decking is out in the open - unleaa you also take advantage of our tree services. Additional leaves, debris and bird droppings will mean that you will probably need to these brush away before they become engrained in your soft wooden decking and each year applying an oil or other specialist decking sealer or stain (with additional protection)

Whilst using a stiff brush should allow you to get the larger loose dirt off your decking moss and algae will generally be cleaned off using a power washer. Power washers are a good way to freshen up composite or PVC decking and can do the same for timber decking before a treatment is applied but more care should be taken on softwood - lower pressure should be used to prevent damage to the top payer of exposed wood.

    Composite Decking versus Timber Decking

We are often asked about the differences and how composite decking or plastic decking compares to timber decking. There are possibly two aspects to caveat when providing an answer to this question - the first is whether your priority is to get a new decking area - if it is and you've only got so far that your budget will stretch to then this will sway you to timber decking. The other is the respective quality of each both in terms of decking installation and deck boards. Clearly a poor installation is a problem regardless of whether you have wooden or composite decking but a poor installation could accelerate the aging of timber decking more than composite. Whilst manufacturers have quality control wood is a natural material and there will sometimes be some variances from one board to another, or from one batch to another especially if they are being sourced from different locations.

As a general rule on quality a composite or PVC deck board will be much more consistent so as long as the manufacturer is reputable and known to use then we would be more confident in the longevity of a composite decking installation.

    Cardiff Decking Design

On other aspect of our decking service in Cardiff is decking design. Granted most of the time people will know exactly what they want in terms of where they want their decking to go and how big. However, where a garden has a slope there can be more options to review such as number of levels, location and number of sets of steps, and also whether to include balustrades and lights on certain levels.

The other design aspect which is rarely considered is the orientation of the deck boards. Most people instinctively have them laid alongside one another and typically this is the most cost effective option and has the least wasted material. However, from a visual perspective using decking square rather than planks is one way to have a different floor design and the other is to lay boards horizontally. If this appeals then let us know and we can cost these options for you too. along with some of our other garden services and maintenance to get your garden ready for decking.

    Frequently Asked Garden Decking Questions:

    • How long will timber decking last?

This will depend on how well it has been looked after. Poorly treated (in other words decking which hasn't been treated at all) will be lucky to last around 10 years. If you have treated your decking annually you should see this reach over 15 years. If you have treated your decking every couple of years and used good quality deck treatments you can get up to 15 years of good use. This may be less if the location of your decking is subjected to a much damper environment such as below large trees which will also mean more bird dropping and debris landing on your decking which will age it more.

    • How do I know it's time to replace my decking?

Certain tell-tell signs will be fairly obvious but ultimately it is up to you. The most important aspect is to prevent anyone from going onto the decking if you have any doubts about its safety.

if you notice that there is movement in the deck boards ad you have tried to re-screw in the same place which makes no difference it will be due to the wood around the screw being worn or rotten. If it is just a small area of damp rot around the head of the screw you could re-fix your deck board to your structure at a different position as a temporary measure. You will of course have a hole where the screw was previously fixed.

If you have balustrades these may be in a similar state and provide very little support. Unfortunately, you will be more limited in where you can re-screw them so new wooden balustrades would be a safer option.

If there are gaps along the length of the boards but they seem to be firmly fixed this could be a more serious issue that your timber support structure is beginning to fail.

Large cracks and warping of the deck boards are faults that can not be fixed so clearly when these are in evidence new decking should be considered.

    • Should we switch to composite decking?

If your budget allows then most people will do. Composite decking these days is very long-lasting. It will look good for years without needing to apply oils or protective coatings. Hardwood timber provides a good alternative with a more traditional and natural look but typically these will be even more expensive than composite decking which is why composite is the preferred choice of deck users

    • Do you carry out decking maintenance?

No, we don't. We specialise in the installation of decking. Cleaning and applying a protective coating is a relatively straightforward job so we don't get much call for it anyway. Most people will do it themselves, or if not many handymen and some garden maintenance services companies will

    • Will you take away our old decking?

Yes, we can take away your old decking and dispose of it through proper recycling channels. There is a cost to us so we do offer this service for a minimal additional charge.

    • Why choose J&Z Fencing Cardiff to install my composite decking?

Our attention to detail and our very experienced team of composite decking installers will ensure you get the best composite decking installation.

There are different levels of composite decking installation, with one option to fix composite deck boards to an existing timber from in the same fashion that you would install timber deck boards. This will be the cheapest option, and if you have a structurally sound deck frame, then it makes sense to do so.

However, composite decking manufacturers will generally provide a full system that includes the frame and special fixings to attach the composite deck boards to the frame. These will enable the boards to be fixed firmly in place without any unsightly screw showing, and is how full composite decking should be installed.
