Fencing Built for Barry's Coastal Gardens

Barry is one of the busiest parts of our patch. It is a short drive from our base in Penarth through Dinas Powys, and we fit fencing right across the town: Barry Island and the Knap, Cadoxton, Colcot, Gibbonsdown, Highlight Park, the Waterfront and every street of CF62 and CF63 in between.

A fence in Barry has to cope with more than most. Gardens close to Whitmore Bay and the Knap, and those on the higher ground above the docks, take the south-westerly wind straight off the Bristol Channel, with salt in the air for much of the year. That is why most of the fences we put up here use concrete posts and concrete gravel boards: the posts will not rot at ground level, and the board keeps the timber panel clear of wet soil.

Featheredge, also called closeboard, is still the most requested garden fencing in Barry, with hit and miss close behind for anyone who wants a more modern look without losing privacy. Whatever you choose, the posts are set deep and firm, because a fence is only as strong as what holds it up.

Garden gates

Side Gates Made to Measure

No two side passages in Barry are quite the same width, so most of our garden gates are built to fit the gap, with a short section of matching fence to close it off where needed. The most common side gate is about 3 feet wide. If you regularly wheel bins, bikes or garden waste through, we can make it wider or fit a pair of double gates.

You choose the ironmongery: a simple latch, a bolt on the inside or a lockable handle. Featheredge timber gates are the most popular, followed by tongue and groove. Metal gates suit anyone who wants light down the side of the house more than privacy.

For wider openings, see our driveway gates, or compare composite gates in Barry.

Decking

Raised Decking for Sloping Gardens

Plenty of Barry gardens rise or fall away from the house, especially on the streets that climb up from the town centre and the seafront. Rather than digging the slope out, a raised or multi-level deck gives you a flat space to sit and eat, and on taller builds there is often room to store garden furniture underneath.

We build in pressure-treated timber or composite. Composite boards are usually fixed to a treated timber frame, which keeps the cost down, but we also fit the composite and aluminium subframe systems that some installers avoid. Replacing an old deck? We can take it away for recycling for a small extra charge.

Fence Heights, Permission and Neighbours

Height

In Wales you can usually put up a fence, wall or gate up to 2 metres high without planning permission, or up to 1 metre where it runs next to a road used by vehicles or its footpath.

When to check first

Permission is needed at any height around a listed building, or where an Article 4 direction or a planning condition removes the right. If in doubt, ask the Vale of Glamorgan Council's planning team.

Neighbours and deeds

Your deeds may say who owns each boundary and what can go on it. We usually need to work from your neighbour's side for part of the job, so it helps to let them know before we arrive.

Repairing or replacing an existing fence without making it any taller does not normally need permission.

Questions

Fencing in Barry: Your Questions Answered

Do you cover all of Barry?

Yes. We fit fences, gates and decking across both Barry postcodes, CF62 and CF63, including Barry Island, the Knap, Cadoxton, Colcot, Gibbonsdown, Highlight Park and the Waterfront. If you are not sure we reach your road, call us on 029 2271 5157.

What type of fence stands up best to the wind in Barry?

For exposed gardens near the seafront or on higher ground, we recommend concrete posts with concrete gravel boards and good-quality pressure-treated featheredge panels. How deep and firm the posts are set matters more than the panel.

Where wind is a real problem, slatted or hit and miss fencing lets some air through and puts less strain on the posts, and composite panels will not rot or need treating.

How high can my fence be without planning permission?

In Wales, a fence, wall or gate can usually be up to 2 metres high without planning permission, or 1 metre where it is next to a road used by vehicles or its footpath. You need permission at any height around a listed building, or where an Article 4 direction or a planning condition removes the right.

Repairing or replacing an existing fence without making it taller does not normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the Vale of Glamorgan Council before we start.

Will you take away my old fence?

Yes. Taking down and disposing of the old panels, posts or hedge is part of our fencing service, so there is nothing left for you to get rid of. Old decking can be removed and recycled too, for a small extra charge.

Can you give me a price before you visit?

Often, yes. Send photos and rough measurements through our quote form and we can usually give you a provisional figure first. We then visit to measure up and confirm the price, free and with no obligation.

Can you make a gate to fit an unusual gap?

Yes. Most of our side gates are made to measure, and we add a matching fence section where the gap is wider than the gate. About 3 feet is the most common width, but we can go wider or fit double gates, with whichever latch, bolt or lock you prefer.

Do you build decking on sloping gardens?

Yes. Raised and multi-level decking is often the simplest way to level a sloping garden without digging it out. We build in timber or composite, and on taller decks there is often room for storage underneath.
