Over the mountain

Fencing for Caerphilly Homes

Caerphilly sits just over the mountain from Cardiff, and its gardens are rarely flat. Terraces climb the hillsides, newer estates are cut into the slopes, and plenty of back gardens rise in steps away from the house. A fence here has to follow the ground without leaving gaps underneath or looking like a staircase.

We step the panels to match the fall of the land, keep every post upright and fill beneath each panel with a gravel board, so the line stays neat and the timber stays off the soil. Concrete posts or galvanised steel Duraposts are our usual choice in Caerphilly, as neither will rot where it meets the ground.

We work throughout the town, including Trecenydd, Penyrheol, Lansbury Park and Energlyn. If you're not sure whether we come out to your street, give us a call.

Boundary Fencing and Panel Styles

The first two photos come from a full boundary replacement: lap panels on Duraposts with concrete gravel boards, fitted around the existing beds and borders. The rest show other styles we supply and fit.

Steps and levels

Raised Decks on Hillside Plots

Where a garden climbs steeply from the back door, a raised timber or composite deck turns an awkward slope into somewhere you can actually sit out. We build the frame to the levels you have, add steps where they're needed, and on taller decks can leave space underneath for storage.

Composite boards are worth a look for a damp valley garden, as they won't go green and slippery the way untreated timber can. Pressure-treated timber is the lower-cost choice and can be stained to match the fence.

Gates

Garden Gates and Side Access

Side passages on Caerphilly's older terraces and semis are often narrow, and many slope. An off-the-shelf gate rarely sits right, so we make gates to fit the opening, hang them to clear the ground on a slope, and match the boards to the new fence.

Choose ledged and braced, full-height boarded or made-to-measure garden gates in a range of finishes, with a latch, a bolt or a lockable handle.

Planning

Caerphilly Fence Rules in Brief

Up to 2 metres

A garden fence, wall or gate up to 2 metres high does not usually need planning permission in Wales.

1 metre by the road

Next to a road used by vehicles, or the footpath alongside it, the limit without permission falls to 1 metre.

Your council

Caerphilly comes under Caerphilly County Borough Council rather than Cardiff. Ask them first if your home is listed or its permitted development rights have been removed.

Fixing a fence, or putting up a replacement no higher than before, needs no application in most cases.

Questions

Fencing in Caerphilly: FAQs

Do you travel to Caerphilly?

Yes. Caerphilly is part of our regular area, including Trecenydd, Penyrheol, Lansbury Park and Energlyn. If you're unsure whether we cover your street, ring 029 2271 5157.

How do you fence a sloping garden?

We step the panels down the slope, keeping each one level, and fill the triangle underneath with a gravel board so there are no gaps for pets to squeeze through. On gentler slopes, closeboard fencing built on rails can follow the ground more closely.

Should I choose concrete or steel posts?

Both last far longer than timber posts. Concrete posts are the traditional choice and take standard panels and gravel boards. Galvanised steel Duraposts are slimmer and lighter, so they look less bulky. We'll recommend one when we see the site.

Do I need planning permission for a new fence in Caerphilly?

Normally not, if it stays under 2 metres, or 1 metre beside a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings and homes where permitted development rights have been removed are the exceptions. Caerphilly County Borough Council is the authority to ask.

Can you replace the fence without wrecking my borders?

We work carefully around beds and planting, as on the job shown above, though some disturbance right at the fence line is hard to avoid when old posts come out.

Is taking the old fence away included?

Yes. Removing and disposing of the old panels and posts is part of the price.
