Timber and composite garden fencing, gates and decking for homes across Llantwit Major, from the old town to the newer estates.
Llantwit Major fencing
Llantwit Major is one of the oldest towns in the Vale, with St Illtud's Church, the Town Hall and the Square at the heart of a conservation area designated in 1970. Its older streets are lined with walls of local limestone rubble, and the town has grown outwards since with newer estates and family homes.
In the old town, we leave the stone walls as they are and fence behind or alongside them where a taller screen is needed. On the newer estates the jobs are more familiar: replacing worn-out panels between back gardens, putting up a smarter side return, or swapping timber for composite so it never needs treating again.
Being so close to the coast, gardens here can be breezy, so we favour concrete posts and gravel boards that will not rot or work loose.
Stone walls
The council's appraisal of the Llantwit Major Conservation Area describes many of its boundaries as local limestone rubble walls, and the Vale of Glamorgan Council will resist proposals to remove or significantly alter them. It has also used an Article 4 direction in the town to control changes to boundary walls, gates and fences facing the road.
So if your garden has an old wall, we will usually suggest keeping it and adding a fence or trellis behind it rather than taking it down. Anything facing the road in the conservation area is worth checking with the council first.
Styles
Timber or composite, solid or slatted: here are some of the styles we put up across the western Vale.

Gates and decking
Most fencing jobs need a gate, and plenty of gardens have room for a deck as well.

Built to the width of your passage.

Panels that never need staining.

Hard-wearing boards that shrug off the weather.

Steps and levels where the garden drops away.

Decks that run down the side to the patio doors.

The lower-cost option, pressure-treated to last.
The process
Planning
Height
In Wales, a fence, wall or gate up to 2 metres high usually needs no planning permission, or 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles or its footpath.
Conservation area
The old town has been a conservation area since 1970. Taking down or altering a traditional stone wall there may need consent, and the council will want any repairs to match.
Who to ask
Llantwit Major comes under the Vale of Glamorgan Council. Check with their planning team if your home is listed or an Article 4 direction applies.
Replacing an existing fence like for like, at the same height, rarely needs an application.

It suits breezy, damp gardens well because it will not rot, warp or need treating. It costs more than timber up front, so we are happy to price both.
