Raised decks with steps
Ideal where the garden sits higher or lower than the house.
Fencing · Gates · Decking
Back garden fences, front boundaries and gates for homes across Ely and west Cardiff, fitted by a local family firm.
West Cardiff fencing
Ely grew fast after it became part of Cardiff in 1922, when more than 3,000 council houses went up in just two years. Many of those homes are still here, with good-sized back gardens, long shared boundaries and open or low-walled front gardens, alongside newer houses built since.
So much of our work in Ely means replacing long runs of tired fencing between neighbouring gardens. We usually suggest concrete posts with gravel boards and featheredge panels: strong, good value and far longer-lasting than timber posts.
If you'd rather not treat the fence every few years, composite panels slot into the same concrete posts.
Front gardens
Many Ely homes have open or low front gardens facing the road. A low picket fence or a short run of panels marks the boundary, keeps dogs and children in and stops people cutting across, without hiding the front of the house.
Next to a road used by vehicles, or its pavement, a fence can only be 1 metre high without planning permission. We measure up and build to suit.
See garden fencing for more styles.
What we fit
The fences and gates below are typical of what we put up across Cardiff. Any of them can be built to suit a back garden, a side passage or a front boundary.
For business premises and yards, we also fit palisade security fencing.
Decking
A deck is a quick way to create a flat, usable space outside the back door.

Ideal where the garden sits higher or lower than the house.

Stays smart for years with just an occasional wash.

Pressure-treated softwood, the lower-cost option.
How it works
Rules and permissions
Height
In Wales, fences and gates up to 2 metres high usually need no planning permission, or 1 metre next to a road used by vehicles or its footpath.
Council and housing association homes
If you rent from Cardiff Council or a housing association, ask your landlord before replacing a fence. Your tenancy agreement may need their consent first.
Ownership
Long rows of gardens often share boundaries. Your deeds should show which fences are yours to replace.
Putting back a fence of the same height as the old one does not normally need planning permission.
