Garden fences, driveway gates and decking for homes in and around St Georges-super-Ely, on the River Ely west of Cardiff.
Village fencing
St Georges-super-Ely is a small village on the western edge of Cardiff, between Peterston-super-Ely and Michaelston-super-Ely, with the River Ely and the main railway line running through. Its church is one of the smallest cruciform churches in Wales, and Castle Farmhouse, the old manor, is Grade I listed.
The historic hamlet by the church has been a conservation area since 1973. Most of its boundaries are limestone rubble walls and wayside hedges, and the Vale of Glamorgan Council looks to keep them, so new fencing here usually goes behind a wall or hedge rather than in place of it.
Away from the old core, gardens are larger than in town, and the jobs are long boundary runs, gates for drives, and decking.
Gates
Village homes often sit back from the lane with a drive in front, and a good pair of gates finishes the frontage. We fit metal and timber driveway gates made to the width of the opening, hung on posts or pillars that can take the weight.
For the garden, we make side and pedestrian gates to match a new fence, with the latch, bolt or lock you choose.
See driveway gates and garden gates.
Styles
Timber suits a village garden best, but composite is worth a look if you never want to treat a fence again.
For barns, yards and paddocks we also fit security fencing.
Decking
More space means more choice: a deck on one level by the house, or a raised deck with a balustrade to catch the evening sun. We build in pressure-treated timber or composite, on frames sized for the job.
In Wales, decking more than 30 centimetres off the ground needs planning permission, so we will flag it if yours is likely to.

How it works
Planning
Heights
Fences and gates up to 2 metres high usually need no planning permission in Wales, or up to 1 metre beside a road used by vehicles or its footpath.
Conservation area
The hamlet by the church has been a conservation area since 1973. The council will resist removing traditional stone walls, so speak to the Vale of Glamorgan Council before touching one.
Trees
Trees in a conservation area are protected, and the council needs six weeks' notice before most pruning or felling.
Like-for-like replacement of an existing fence rarely needs an application.
